Use BA’s companion voucher on Iberia flights

I was never a fan of the British Airways Premium Plus Amex card, mainly because I was, for the most time, a solo traveller. Its companion voucher went through a major overhaul in 2022 though which made it much more appealing, and I will take a close look it today.

The Travel Together Ticket issued by the Chase British Airways Visa Signature card is, as far as I know, exactly the same, so the following discussions hold for both.

To earn the companion voucher, you need to spend £10,000 in a card year. The voucher is issued right after you’ve met the spending criteria, and valid for two years from that date.

  • Applies to redemption tickets on BA, EI and IB metal
  • The cardholder must travel
  • The origin can be anywhere
  • Works on one-way, return and open-jaw itineraries
  • Works on all cabin classes
  • Save 50% in Avios for one or two persons
  • Full taxes and charges are still payable

There are two major improvements: firstly, solo travellers can use it for 50% discount; secondly, it’s extended to Iberia and Aer Lingus flights too.

Unfortunately due to the constant efforts of BA to devalue Avios, long-haul redemptions are, very often, no longer very good in value even when the voucher is applied. For short-haul redemptions the math works out better, but in absolute terms you aren’t saving a lot.

The best way to use this voucher lies with Iberia, as they have a very generous redemption chart.

A one-way flight from Madrid to New York, in business class, costs only 34,000 Avios. For South America it’s 42,500 or 51,000 Avios. This is incredibly cheap compared to BA.

Taxes and fees are also very reasonable. For Madrid – Buenos Aires return it costs 102,000 Avios + £236.30 – superb value! Note that the chart above is for off-peak dates, and it will cost more in peak season.

With the companion voucher applied, departing from Madrid in off-peak season, you will pay the following figures for a return trip per person:

  • New York – 34,000 Avios + £215.60
  • Bogota – 42,500 Avios + £224.20
  • Buenos Aires – 51,000 Avios + £236.30

Note that you need to book on ba.com rather than iberia.com to use the voucher. You could add your positioning flight to / from Madrid in the same booking with the 50% discount applied too. However:

  • Don’t add London – Madrid to the same booking, otherwise it incurs the hefty APD
  • Don’t mix with BA flights, otherwise it increases the cost significantly

My recommendation is to book e.g. Madrid – New York – Madrid – London using the voucher, and then sort out London – Madrid separately. Here’s my trip to Bogota:

It costs 48,875 Avios + £244. As it’s an open-jaw booking, it’s not possible to do it online – confirm online that there’s availability and then call BA to book it, mentioning that you want to use the companion voucher.

Earn 250 Avios and more with Red by Dufry

We wrote about Red by Dufry before, which is a loyalty program that gives you discount at duty free stores and other perks at airports worldwide.

In the Red by Dufry app, go to My Profile, scroll down to the bottom where you have the option to add a partner account. If you link your Iberia Plus account, you will 1 Avios per £1 / €1 spent at Dufry stores, and 250 bonus Avios on your first purchase.

It seems that British Airways is also a partner and the same earning rate / promotion applies. My account was already linked to Iberia Plus. I was trying to unlink and relink but I couldn’t see either Iberia or BA in the partner dropdown list anymore.

Historically Red by Dufry had some promo codes that gave away points or even Platinum status. Give them a try but I doubt any of them work anymore:

  • RED300POINTS
  • HAPPYBIRTHDAY2020
  • REDPLATSMART0821
  • AegeanMilesPlatinum

As a Red by Dufry member you get a guaranteed discount at many duty free shops and earn Avios with every purchase, so it makes sense to create an account.

My review of Iberia A330’s business class

The final trip before my next job is to South America, and first stop Buenos Aires! It sounds insane, but a one-way flight from Madrid to Buenos Aires in business class costs only 51,000 Avios plus just over €100, so although I have to add the London – Madrid leg myself it’s still a fantastic deal!

The flight, operated by Iberia, is mostly on an A350 aircraft which features the newer business class design. Unfortunately my flight is operated by an older A330 aircraft instead. However, from my research the two business class products don’t differ that much (at least not from the pictures), and it’s not worth tweaking my travel plans for the A350.

For checking in, Iberia uses Terminal 4 at Madrid airport, although you’ll actually take the shuttle train later to T4S for all non-Schengen departures. Priority passengers (business class and Oneworld elite) use the check-in counters numbered 700-799.

Priority passengers, as well as cardholders of Amex Platinum, are invited to use the fast track security.

We are onboard! Iberia’s business class cabin features 1-2-1 staggered configuration, which is probably the most commonly seen nowadays across all airlines.

For solo travellers the real window seats provide the best privacy, especially when you are sleeping.

If you are travelling with a partner, then choose the middle seats that are closer to the centre.

The monitor is mounted above the ottoman, which is my preferred design.

The seat converted into a bed:

The baseline is, it is a lie-flat business class seat, and that’s about it. It’s not really pleasing aesthetically, not very comfortable and is lacking in storage space. The A350 product appears nicer but kind of follows the same design principle and is barely anything revolutionary.

The amenity kit – Iberia is obviously obsessed with beige and grey!

The menu:

My beef tenderloin, cod tartare and ice cream:

Here is the thing: the meal portion isn’t really big, and for a 13-hour flight you don’t get served another meal (small plate of pasta) until close to landing.

In between there’s only salad and fruit available. I think it’s the first time I have to fight hunger when flying business class!

The IFE contains a decent, although not great selection of international films and dramas.

Their in-flight wifi is excellent though. Business class passengers and Iberia Plus members (free sign-up) can get the messaging package for free. A full package costs €24.99 for the entire flight and supports video streaming.

I had known what to expect before I hopped onboard, so there’s little surprise (good or bad) in this trip. Other things equal I’d probably choose most other airlines over Iberia, but given their excellent redemption deals I’m likely to fly with them again when going to South America next time.

How I finally got my Iberia refund

Iberia’s website is, to put it mildly, a mess. I’ve encountered countless errors when logging into my account, searching for flights or making a booking.

When I needed to cancel an Avios flight a few years ago however, it was a smooth experience. As far as I can remember, it was just a matter of clicking a button on their website and the refund was on the way, not any harder than with any other airlines.

It seems to have gone for the worse though. I had to cancel another Avios flight, booked through Iberia, about two months ago. It wasn’t possible online, and I was told to call an Iberia Plus number.

It took the agent a while to process my request, and he somehow needed to calculate the refund amount on the call. Afterwards I could see my booking cancelled on Iberia’s website, but neither the Avios or the fees were ever returned to my account.

If it were a cash ticket I’d have had applied for a chargeback from Amex before long, but with Avios involved it’s much more complicated. I’m not sure what’s going on with Iberia, but my case is definitely not isolated. In fact some people are reported to have waited for more than one year now!

You could keep calling Iberia Plus’s customer service number but don’t expect a positive outcome. Fortunately someone shared an email address [email protected], which seems to be Iberia’s Legal / Service Recovery department.

With the original e-ticket sent, I received an Avios re-redeposit email, and a response from them within five days:

We apologise for the inconvenience caused in relation to flight IB0000 of 1/01/2022.

With regard to your request, we have processed a refund of 32.48 USD, which you will receive in a few days’ time through the same channel you used to make payment.

They didn’t bother to change the email template, but I was happy about the quick turnaround. The refund hit my credit card account two days later.

If you are requesting a refund from Iberia, try the aforementioned email address and fingers crossed!

Double Avios with Qatar Airways and Iberia

If you are flying with Qatar Airways or Iberia in the next three months, there’s a double Avios reciprocal offer between Qatar Airways and Iberia which may apply.

You can view the Qatar Airways offer here.

  • Book between August 15 and November 30
  • Fly between September 1 and November 30
  • The flight must be operated by Iberia, and IB or QR coded
  • Eligible flights credited to the Qatar Airways Privilege Club receive double Avios

The same offer from Iberia doesn’t have a landing page, but I’ve received email communication on this. If you fly on Qatar Airways and it’s QR or IB coded, you receive double Avios if credited to Iberia Plus.

It’s a weird offer as you must credit your flight to the other program to benefit. Anyway it’s worth keeping in mind, although beware that the two programs may have different accrual ratios, and the tier points are not shared between them.

Iberia Gift Card Sale – Save 25% off Your Next Flight Bookings

Iberia is running a promotion on its gift cards (again!) and it may be interesting to some.

You can check the offer here and click the Buy Now button to make a purchase. The gift cards provided in the link are in GBP, however you can switch the country if you want options in EUR or USD.

Until 14 February, you can enjoy a 25% discount when you buy gift cards, and there doesn’t seem to be a limit on the amount.

  • Can be used against Iberia / Iberia Express / Air Nostrum flight bookings
  • Revenue bookings only, i.e. not award flights
  • The flight must take place by 31 December 2021

25% is a very decent offer, and remember that it means additional savings on whatever cheap bargains you find. The snag of course, is that you must fly by the end of this year, which can be tricky to many of us.

If you are frequent traveller to or from Spain, the deal might make sense as I expect intra-Europe travel resume to some extent in a few months’ time.

Oneworld Sapphire after three short-haul flights!

I thought British Airways was already very slow in publishing their COVID-19 membership extension policy, but obviously there are worse ones out there – its sister airline Iberia hasn’t even started it yet.
