My review of Fairmont Amman

For my visit to Jordan I’m spending most of my time in the capital Amman – unorthodox I know but I’m just too lazy! My original plan was to spend four nights at the InterContinental, costing a total of less than 70k points thanks to my Chase card.

I decided in favour of the Fairmont in the end, because:

  • It is ranked #1 on TripAdvisor
  • I’ve never stayed at a Fairmont hotel before
  • The Accor Step rate is very attractive: 3-for-2 + breakfast + $100 spend and more

I booked a Fairmont Gold room for three nights for less than £500.

I arrived in Royal Jordanian’s chauffeur. Ride from the airport takes about 40 minutes.

Lots of festive decorations in the hotel, and many “Merry Christmas” greetings from the staff.

The lady at the front desk explained to me about the breakfast, welcome drink, and $100 credit. They don’t have a brochure about restaurants and facilities, which I think can be improved.

Safety is taken seriously in this country. Vehicles and guests must go through security check when entering the hotel. The key card is programmed to work for the public floor and your floor only.

Floor 14, 15 and 16 are Fairmont Gold floors.

I got no upgrade at all, despite being an Accor Gold member booking the Step rate. Considering I probably paid less than most standard-room guests, I will not complain.

It is a corner room though, so might be slightly bigger.

It’s got a small vestibule and wardrobe. They use the space fairly well and the room is very well appointed.

There’s even a small office at the back.

The TV set supports Miracast, not as good as Chromecast but usable.

The bathroom is spacious with separate toilet and shower cabins.

There are two nuisances though. Cover on the flush button is falling off, and there’s only one set of body wash and shampoo fixated to the wall in the shower cabin, which is a hassle when you are bathing in the tub.

Fairmont, Ritz Carlton, Four Seasons and Sheraton occupies the four corners of the intersection. It is probably one of the most affluent areas of Amman.

Welcome amenity:

I was told about the closure of the Fairmont Gold lounge (for renovation) at check-in. It was neither communicated on their website or prior to my stay, which feels unprofessional.

Breakfast is served in the Lebanese restaurant Nur.

It is all buffet and no a-la-carte dining. I haven’t had the best experience in terms of breakfast in the Middle East, and Fairmont Amman didn’t change that. There are some international options such as chow mien and fried rice, but I’m not impressed by the quality either.

The egg station:

Afternoon tea is served at the Crystal Lounge, between 2pm and 4pm.

Happy Hour is hosted at the Caprice restaurant, between 5pm and 7pm.

The menu this time is very solid!

You’ve got multiple options for appetisers, mains and desserts. You won’t be short of alcohol supply either.

This kind of dinner easily sets you back £50+ pp in London, so Fairmont Gold pays off.

To spend the $100 credit I had two lunches in the hotel too. First one is Lebanese at Nur.

The lamb wrap is decent. Another meal is at the Asian restaurant Tsuki. The Korean fried chicken and lobster laksa are pretty good.

Spa and gym is at floor 3.

The outdoor swimming pool is closed in the winter, and the only spa facility most guests can use is a steam room. If you staying at the Gold floor however, there’s an exclusive VIP area reserved for you. You’ll find a jacuzzi, sauna and steam room in the changing room.

In the public area there’s another jacuzzi and a swimming pool.

There’s a also relaxation room with snacks and tea.

The spa (for Fairmont Gold) is great. Weather was pretty bad for my first two days so I mostly stayed in except for purchasing some essentials, and I spent a lot of time here.

The staff on the other hand, are lacking in profession. No one mentioned the Fairmont Gold spa to me at all, even when I inquired they mentioned only the regular steam room to me, without considering the possibility that I was on the Gold floor. Thankfully I asked a cleaner who was very keen on showing it to me.

When I asked about late check-out the front desk was also very rigid, saying that it would be upon availability on the day of checking out. On the last day however it was the (suspected) deputy manager who served me, and she was much more friendly and professional. She didn’t even look in the system before agreeing to my late check-out request, and proactively gave me half an hour more to “enjoy the lunch”.

When I saw a #1 hotel with top TripAdvisor rating I was expecting a flawless experience, but Fairmont Amman didn’t live up to that expectation. It is however still an upscale and decent property, on a par with some of the Waldorf Astoria and St Regis hotels that I’ve stayed at.

Accor: bonus points with Qatar and great hotel redemption deals

[Qatar Airways]

Accor has had a partnership with Qatar Airways since 2022, which allows Accor elite members to acquire Qatar’s status, as high as Oneworld Emerald, after only one flight. You should consider this fast track offer if you are qualified.

They have also just launched a new offer for account linking:

  • Link your Accor and QR accounts by Feb 29th
  • Fly once with Qatar Airways by March 31st for 1,000 bonus Avios
  • Stay once with Accor by March 31st for 1,000 bonus points

Accor has a similar reciprocal scheme with Flying Blue and Qantas. I think you can switch every 12 months.

[Limitless Experiences]

Similar to Marriott and Hilton, Accor has an auction / redemption platform named Limitless Experiences, where you can exchange or bid for experiences including hotel stays and events.

I’ve being paying attention since I’ve accrued 10k+ points from the All Signature promotion last year, and it seems that they are finally offering something interesting. There are discounted redemptions for hotel stays in Asia, Africa and Middle East.

Here are some examples:

  • Japan, Grand Mercure Ise-shima Resort & Spa (half-board) 7,000 points
  • Japan, Mercure Kyoto Miyazu Resort & Spa (half-board) 5,000 points
  • Abu Dhabi, Fairmont Bab Al Bahr (breakfast) 4,000 points
  • Bahrain, Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain (breakfast) 4,400 points
  • Qatar, Pullman Doha West Bay (breakfast) 4,000 points
  • Kenya, Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club (two nights all-inclusive) 20,000 points
  • South Africa, Mercure Hotel Midrand (two-nights breakfast) 2,000 points

They will contact you with further details within 14 days of redemption, and be careful as there are various stay dates requirement. There are many cheap options in South Africa and India – paying only 2,000 points (€40) for two nights is insane.

The Fairmont hotel in Abu Dhabi is also a great bargain, as it can cost as much as €300 on some days in February. You must stay by the end of March though, and it doesn’t work me unfortunately.

In addition there are some other on-property experiences available, such as:

  • Dubai, Pullman Dubai Jumeirah Lakes Towers, 30 minutes’ PT – 200 points
  • Jordan, Mövenpick Resort & Residences Aqaba, buffer dinner for 2 – 1,500 points
  • Jordan, Mövenpick Resort & Spa Tala Bay, underwater discovery – 700 points
  • Bahrain, Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain, dinner for 2 – 1,500 points
  • Saudia, Mövenpick Hotel Al Khobar, seafood buffer for 2 – 3,000 points
  • Maldives, Raffles Maldives, sunken dinner for 2 – 10,000 points

All Signature – buy Accor points at half price

Accor Hotel Group, confusingly, has many membership programs that apply to different hotel brands and different regions. The All Signature program which was originally available to Brazilian residents is now open to all, and it creates some interesting options.

The homepage is here. There are three plan tiers that offer monthly Accor point deposit along with other benefits. You can choose to pay monthly, quarterly or annually.

  • Discover: R$119 / R$357 / R$1,428 & 1,000 monthly points
  • Explorer: R$345 / R$1,035 / R$4,140 & 3,000 monthly points
  • Absolute: R$560 / R$1,680 / R$6,720 & 5,000 monthly points

You received double points on the 4th, 8th and 12th month, which means you’ll collect 15,000 / 45,000 / 75,000 bonus points per year in each plan respectively.

You will also earn 200 / 600 / 1,000 status points per month with each plan. You earn enough status points to become Accor Gold (7,000 status points) after being Explorer for 12 months or Absolute for 7 months. 12 months of Absolute sets you only 2,000 points short from Accor Platinum (14,000 status points.)

Until November 30th, you can apply promo code BFALLSIG23 for 50% off a monthly or quarterly plan, and BFALLSIG15 for 15% off an annual plan. Note that the discount applies to the first payment only.

There are many possible combinations. For the annual Absolute plan, you’ll be paying R$5712 (€1,065) for 75,000 points – equivalent to €1,500 when used towards Accor stays, and that’s a very respectable 29% discount.

I don’t think everyone needs that many points though, and the deal actually becomes more interesting for monthly and quarterly plans, as you get a larger 50% discount.

The quarterly Absolute plan costs R$840 (€157) and comes with 15,000 points worth €300, so that’s almost 50% off! I’m not sure whether I can cancel the subscription after just three months though or if it’s minimum one-year commitment. I asked my Brazilian friend to go through the offer page and there doesn’t seem to be any related term, so I assume it’s the former.

Even if I end up having to undertake one year, the price difference is only R$168 (€32) which is fine. I made the purchase and the 5,000 points are deposited to my account within a couple of minutes:

I already have the All Plus membership and there’s no conflict. We know the following:

  • You can hold All Signature, All Plus and the Chinese All Plus cards at the same time
  • For Accor Plus there are mixed data points – some people have succeeded in purchasing All Signature

Note that the transaction could by blocked by your credit card as the charge is in BRL. I tried my U.S. Amex card first but it was declined, and changing to Chase solved the issue.

The Absolute subscription comes with some additional benefits:

  • 10% transfer bonus from select partner programs (mostly South American)
  • In the 4th month and then annually, Diamond members can gift an Accor Gold card; Platinum and Gold members can gift an Accor Silver card
  • Executive Lounge access at Pullman Guarulhos Sao Paolo Airport, 5 visits per year
  • Early / exclusive access to Accor Experiences and Dream Stays offers

It does indeed seem to be a very good offer to me – you can buy cheap points, upgrade to a higher status level more easily, plus enjoy some additional perks. Note that however their customer service is still Brazil-based so it might pose challenges when you need help.

As a reader has pointed out, you could cancel the subscription online yourself.

Accor points are valid for 12 months from the last time any point is credited to your account. They could be used towards your hotel stays both online and in-store.

Last chance to buy Accor Gold & Oneworld Ruby for only £65!

We wrote about fast track opportunities for Accor a while ago, and one major shortcut was to purchase the ibis Business card, as you are granted Gold status for as long as you have a valid membership. Sadly it is coming to an end soon, and you need to jump onboard before it is too late!

As explained by Accor, the ibis Business program will discontinue on March 22nd and be replaced by a new program called ALL PLUS ibis, which will continue to offer some sort of discount for ibis stays. The new membership doesn’t gift Gold status anymore, but offers ten night credits annually instead.

If you join ibis Business now, you are still gifted Gold and it will be valid throughout your subscription period. So the best strategy would be:

  • Buy ibis Business now – reports suggest that the Gold status is valid through 2024
  • You will earn additional ten night credits on March 22nd

For the UK, a one-year subscription costs £65 whereas it’s £119 for two years, and it’s usually €90 / €159 for most other countries. I’m not sure if the two-year subscription comes with a longer Gold validity.

Accor Gold isn’t hugely useful outside China where they offer daily breakfast for one, but room upgrade and late check-out are still something. Beware that buying ibis Business will create a new Accor account, so if you have an existing account you might need to merge them.

Qatar Airways has an ongoing promotion with Accor, which allows Accor Gold members to fast track to Qatar Airways Silver after only one flight. Silver status (Oneworld Ruby) offers extra baggage allowance and free seat selection when flying Qatar Airways and its partners (BA, AA, Cathay etc.), plus you can access the dedicated Silver Lounge at Doha.

There will also be a new ALL PLUS Voyageur membership (converted from the old Business Plus program) which offers 20 night credits annually.

Impressive deal: 1088 HKD for Accor Plus membership and a free night!

You probably know Accor, but not Accor Plus unless you live in Asia Pacific. Accor Plus is a paid membership that targets specific countries in that region which offers dining discount amongst other benefits.

Accor Plus Hong Kong is running an impressive deal, probably as a double-eleven promotion but it’s unclear when it ends. If you are interested, purchase the Explorer package that costs 1088 HKD (~£117 or $139) as it includes one complimentary night at participating hotels.

(UPDATE: Accor Plus Malaysia sells a membership that includes two complimentary nights for 1090 MYR / £199 / $235)

You may redeem the free night at almost all hotels in Asia Pacific, including the aspirational properties such as Sofitel Legend Hanoi and Fairmont Singapore. Availability may not be great though, and unfortunately it’s impossible to check unless you have an active membership.

The Accor Plus membership is valid for one year at countries such as Australia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand. Personally I think its most valuable benefits are:

  • Red Hot Rooms: hotels on sale could offer up to 50% off, exclusive to Accor Plus members
  • Dining Discount: one-person-free when dining at participating restaurants, or 25%-off if it’s a one person only. It works best for two people as it’s essentially half-price

You also get free Accor Silver status but it’s not really useful. If you plan to visit Asia in the next 12 months I think you should seriously consider signing up.

You need a Hong Kong address to sign up, however as you only need an electronic membership card I don’t think that’s a blocker.

Accor promotion: Europe 500 points and China triple points

Accor is committed to a green initiative at select European properties, and is giving its members an incentive to stay with them by offering bonus points.

You can sign up to the offer here.

  • Book by September 15
  • Stay between August 15 and October 15
  • Minimum two night stay
  • Earn 500 bonus points per stay, up to three times

500 bonus points is equivalent to €10 when redeeming at Accor hotels. The page has a link to the list of participating hotels, which appears to be mostly Ibis, Novotel and Mercure in the UK and other European countries.

There’s an offer for Accor hotels in Greater China too.

  • Register by October 9
  • Book and stay by October 10
  • Earn triple points for all stays up to 5 nights

Accor extending status again in China… Should you take a punt?

Accor has just published a fast track offer in China, and more importantly, the announcement to extend status expiry again.

All Accor members whose account address is in Greater China (mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) will have their elite status expiry extended to December 31, 2023. The change will be reflected in July.

Compared to Europe and the Americas, Covid restrictions are still relatively uptight in most Asian countries and they are not ready to welcome international tourists yet. China is obviously the worst – this year it has been unthinkable for many to even travel outside the city they live in, as the circumstances can become extremely complicated once your origin or destination has a single Covid case.

As a consequence, it’s impossible for most Chinese members to retain their status this year. Questions have been raised whether the hotel chains will extend status again this year, although most people weren’t optimistic, Accor has come to surprise us.

The question is, will others follow suit? Given their track records in the last two years I don’t think it’s that unlikely, especially for Hilton who made a few very fast moves.

I have changed my Marriott’s address back to one in China just in case, and might do with the other programs too. Beware that the current IHG fast track promotion isn’t open to residents of Greater China, so if you’re signed up don’t mess up.
