Mr & Mrs Smith Hotel Directory Now Available on IHG
Back in October IHG finally started integrating Mr & Mrs Smith hotels into their booking system. The process takes time, but it looks like a decent number of Mr & Mrs Smith properties are already on board.
You could view the hotel directory here. Remember that not all 1000+ Mr & Mrs Smith hotels are participating – only around 400 of them have signed up to IHG so far, although the number might increase in the future.
From what I can tell, IHG has specifically handpicked cities or locations where it’s got no or very weak footprint. Take the UK as an example, you barely see any big city on the list apart from London, where there are nine properties.
On the other hand, Cornwall has six properties, including St Mawes Hotel and Driftwood:
And Cotswold has also got five properties, including Cowley Manor and the Rectory Hotel:
Which is great news, as hotel chains are almost non-existent in such areas. Bare in mind though that you could only book the Best Flexible Rates via IHG, which could be significantly more expensive than booking direct or via other channels.
IHG hotels can now cost fewer than 10,000 points a night
Prior to the introduction of dynamic pricing recently, we know that IHG had fixed award prices for each individual hotel, which started at 10,000 points. There were also regular Pointbreaks promotion where award night redemption was reduced to as low as 5,000 points.
With dynamic pricing in place, this is no longer the case and Pointbreaks has become a page in the history book. Interestingly, as a side effect it appears that the 10,000-point floor has also been broken.
Here are some examples in China. Holiday Inn Express Kaifeng City Center costs only 5,000 points per night, whereas the best flexible rate is around £34:
Holiday Inn Express Zhangjiakou Park View:

Holiday Inn Express Foshan Nanhai:

Unsurprisingly these are all the select-service Holiday Inn Express hotels, and hotels in Asia tend to be cheaper than the rest of the world. It’s good to see the dynamic pricing doesn’t only go upwards anyway, and hopefully we’ll see more of such in the future.
IHG 3-for-2 UK & Europe Sale
IHG has launched a new Night On Us sale in UK & Europe – well, “launch” isn’t the correct word, as similar deals have been coming round in the last six months or so.
- Book by 31 December
- Stay by 31 March, 2021
- A minimum stay of three nights is required
- Enjoy 34% off the Best Flexible Rate
- Non-refundable first-night deposit is required
- Changeable up to 48 hours before arrival
And here are some rates I found in London (per night):
- InterContinental London Park Lane £175
- InterContinental London The O2 £93
- Crowne Plaza Kings Cross £56
- Crowne Plaza London Kensington £76
- Hotel Indigo Paddington £69
- Holiday Inn Regents Park £60
- Holiday Inn Express Hammersmith £29
Some of the rates are quite good. However, beware that there’s a non-refundable deposit for the booking, so make sure your trip is going ahead before reserving anything.
[Black Friday] 50% extra on IHG Bonus Points Package
In addition to its hotel sale, IHG is also giving Bonus Points Package bookings a boost this Black Friday.
You can see its mention on the BF promo page here, and details about Bonus Points Package here. If you book any package by the end of this year, and stay by 31st March 2021, you’ll earn 50% extra on the package. For example if you book a 5000-points package, you’ll earn 7500 bonus points for the booking in total.
And IHG has made it crystal clear on the promo pages – these points count toward status. With this promotion it may be fairly easy for you to hit Spire next year, although it doesn’t have many solid benefits unless your stays are mostly in Asia.
[Black Friday] IHG 30%-off UK & Europe sale
Our first Black-Friday post – IHG has started their sale early this year.
You can access IHG’s promotion page here. As you may have realised, it’s not really a new offer. “More To See” is a promotion that IHG started earlier this year and has been going on for a while, although the actual content has altered a few times.
In terms of the BF edition:
- Book by January 10th, 2021
- Stay between December 4th, 2020 and April 30th, 2021
- Valid for hotels in the UK and Europe
- You save 32% off the best flexible rate (including 2% member-exclusive)
- Free cancellation allowed 72 hours before check-in
Look for the Book Now Pay Later rate plan when you search:
Here are some London hotels I found, for the first Saturday of December:
- InterContinental London Park Lane £192
- InterContinental London The O2 £134
- Crowne Plaza Kings Cross £67
- Crowne Plaza London Kensington £65
- Hotel Indigo Paddington £59
The rates are not bad, but to be honest I was expecting something more from IHG. At least I thought they’d re-run the 2-for-1 flash sale which was offered a few months ago.
IHG Ambassador 10% rebate renewal benefit terminated
I’ve written about the IHG Ambassador programme and highly recommend you to join even if you stay at InterContinental hotels just once. When it comes to renewal, you used to have two options:
- Pay 40,000 points
- Pay $200, get 15,000 points and 10% rebate on award stays for a year (max rebate 100k points)
It was a no-brainer to go for option 2. Back in February though, when I was going to renew I found the 10% rebate message missing:
You should be able to see your options here too if your membership is due to expire in the next two months. I wasn’t sure what’s happening so sent a request to the Ambassador service team. One representative confirmed that I was still eligible, and the missing message was simply a glitch. I was rest assured and went ahead with the renewal.
Eight months have passed, and all of sudden there are some discussions about the termination of this benefit again on Flyertalk. Also I noticed that none of my stays have had the rebate posted (it was very slow in previous years too) so made a claim using IHG’s contact form.
The response I got is as follows:
I’d like to share with you on the other hand that the 10% rebate for Reward Night stay benefit has already been discontinued for Ambassador renewals made on 13 Feb 2020. In this regard, I’m so sorry to inform that your below stay will no longer be eligible for this benefit.
Amusingly, it’s the same representative who confirmed my eligibility for the rebate in February. Without question I replied quoting the original response, as I believe I have enough reason to insist on the rebate.
Another representative (supposedly the manager) replied promptly, apologised again and offered 10,000 points as a one-time compensation. Given that my rebate due is already in this range, and I have award stays planned in the next few months, I asked for another 10,000 points which was granted – not a shabby result!
It’s absolutely a shame to see this benefit go – in fact I deem it one of the most important benefits offered by the Ambassador membership, as it doesn’t require staying at InterContinental hotels. And it’s a bit dodgy of IHG not to give proper notice or public announcement on its removal, although it was implied on the renewal page.
So if you are wondering when your Ambassador rebate will land in your IHG account, it wouldn’t. The scheme is still quite decent, and I’ll probably continue renewing in the future, but I’ll think twice before picking my payment option.
IHG Ambassador free night enrolment offer extended, Creation 5,000 bonus points
We wrote about the very impressive Ambassador enrolment offer back in July, and this offer has just been extended.

As you can see in the programme’s terms and conditions, the offer’s deadline is now 31 December, as opposed to the original date of 15 November.
This is great news to some – if you are an existing Ambassador member, it’s only possible to renew within two months of the expiry date. It means, if your membership is set to expire in February 2021, you will be able to benefit from this offer now. Unfortunately mine ends September next year so they need to extend much further!
As I’ve mentioned in the intro, IHG Ambassador is great programme and it’s sensible to join even if you are staying at an InterContinental hotel just once. With this free night offer on top, I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase or renew my membership.
On a separate note but still IHG related – many UK Creation IHG card holders have received an email today – between 1 November and 15 December, you’ll be awarded 5,000 bonus points on your first stay at any IHG hotel globally. You need to pay with your Creation IHG credit card (whether Premium or not).
It’s a decent bonus points offer, and doesn’t appear to be targeted.
InterContinental the George has just become “All Club”
There were two Principal Hotels in Edinburgh. After joining IHG, one of them became a Kimpton (which I reviewed here), and the other converted into InterContinental the George.
The hotel suffered massively from Covid, and has only re-opened very recently. There is a very interesting development though – the hotel has become “All Club” now, which means all hotel guests enjoy the Club InterContinental benefits.
Searching on ihg.com, you can see that even the basic room type: Superior Room comes with Club InterContinental access.
And what does Club InterContinental include? As suggested on their website:
- Complimentary welcome drink on arrival
- Sumptuous Breakfast
- All day refreshments
- Evening drinks and canapés
- Two complimentary items for pressing (per stay)
- Complimentary local telephone calls
- Complimentary WIFI
This is pretty much what you get when staying at an InterContinental hotel with club lounge benefits.
Prior to the George, the only “All Club” InterContinental hotel is the Maldives Maamunaga Resort. I think it’s more natural for a resort in Maldives to offer an inclusive package for all guests, and quite surprised that a city hotel has followed suit.
On the other hand though, it’s good to see that luxury hotels are providing more “freebies” to their guests, instead of making everything payable.
It’s not only good news though. The hotel has decided to completely shut its award night availability by marking all rooms as club, i.e. non-standard. It makes no sense, since you can certainly redeem points at the InterContinental Maldives Maamunaga Resort and I hope the hotel or IHG can rectify it soon.

However, it appears that you can use your Ambassador weekend night certificate here, which isn’t a bad option.
