Extend your InterContinental Ambassador (& Diamond) status for free

InterContinental Ambassador is an exclusive paid membership program created by IHG for its top brands such as Six Senses, Regent and InterContinental. You usually have to pay $200 or 40,000 points annually to renew it, but there’s a less-known grace policy that allows you to extend it for free.

You can find the details in the program terms and conditions, clause 8. In short:

  • A once-in-a-lifetime two-month extension is applicable to all members
  • A once-in-a-lifetime six-month extension is applicable to all members on their second membership year or greater

You cannot combine both to have an eight-month extension, but you are entitled to both extensions at different times.

If you need more time to enjoy your Ambassador benefits but are not ready to pay yet, remember that these two free extension options are available. From the reports we’ve received, it also extends your Diamond status as long as your Ambassador membership is extended to a new calendar year.

My Review of Kimpton Charlotte Square, Edinburgh

(Updated in September 2022)

I visited this hotel again to use my Amex £100 cashback offer. I booked a single room with BOGOF at £274, and then they announced the Queen’s lying-at-rest which shot up all hotels’ rate – lucky me!

I love their boutique vibe and nature-inspired setup.

I’m upgraded to a double room, which is similar to what I got last time. Very lovely and cosy.

Complimentary breakfast for Diamond. It’s mainly buffet with a few cook-to-order dishes.

Gym and spa:

Sadly they don’t have a jacuzzi.

(Originally posted in August 2020)

I was in Scotland for a week a couple of weeks ago, as my “Escape trip” from London 🙂 My second stop was Edinburgh, where I stayed for three nights.

For the first two nights I booked the Courtyard hotel in the centre – you really can’t beat their flash sale, thanks to which I paid a total of £79 for two nights. This is an incredible deal, as the regular rate you expect for late July and August in past years was usually £150+, if not more.

I needed to find something for the third night though, and decided to give the new Kimpton a try. This was one of the two Principal hotels in Edinburgh, and the other converted into an InterContinental instead, in George Square.

I redeemed 25,000 points for a one-night stay, which was pretty good. An alternative would have been £165 via Amex FHR, which I’ll talk about at the end of this article.

The hotel is located near the West End, which is at the edge of the city centre. This is still a good location right next the the Prince Street, but you should expect moderate amount of walk to the train station and Royal Mile etc.

On the day of arrival, I received an SMS in the morning asking if I needed anything for my stay, which is very rare in Europe.

There are a retro bike and some other cute items at the hotel entrance, which I find really adorable. The restaurant has also got a very unique look, that makes you feel like being in a greenhouse.

I had no problem checking in at 1pm. Due to sanitary concerns only half of the rooms were open at the moment, however the hotel could still get relatively busy during weekends.

I got a one-level upgrade from Standard room to Superior as Spire elite. I’m not sure what the differences are, but it does feel very specious at least. A friend (Platinum) booked via Amex FHR and got the same upgrade, which we find not very generous.

Again I quite like the retro deco in the room.

As the fitness room was not open at this point, yoga mat was provided in each guest room. I was quite impressed by its quality.

Complimentary “Social Hour” is offered at the hotel bar from 5pm to 6pm daily, during which soft drinks and house wines are provided to all guests for free.

When the hotel just re-opened and this was not permitted due to the circumstances, I think they comped all guests’ breakfast instead, which is probably more valued by someone like me 🙂

I find all the hotel staff I interacted amicable and professional. My 4pm late check-out request was also granted, although it took some time to confirm.

In general this Kimpton is probably my favourite hotel in Edinburgh so far. I’ve stayed at the Waldorf Astoria which is two minutes’ walk away, and although the latter does have more history and great castle view, I prefer Kimpton for its very comfy refurbished guest room.

If you want to book this hotel, using points may be an excellent option. Paying cash, Amex FHR is great especially for one-night stays as you pay the best flexible rate and also get privileges like free breakfast, $100 hotel credit, room upgrade and guaranteed 4pm late check-out – none of these is included as IHG elite benefits except room upgrade.

If you don’t have Amex Platinum card, you could also book via an agent who participates in IHG’s Luxury Collection programme, which offers almost identical benefits to FHR, except that late check-out is only guaranteed at 2pm. Virtuoso is probably the most convenient platform for this.

Unlimited half-price Kimpton stays with InterContinental Ambassador

Right now InterContinental Ambassador is running a 20K bonus points promotion for those who join or renew their membership. The program comes with substantial perks when you stay with certain IHG brands, and there’s even another hidden gem that not many people are aware of.

In each membership year you are granted one weekend night certificate (BOGOF voucher), which waives the second-night’s charge when you book a two-night weekend stay at InterContinental hotels. In 2020 when the pandemic hit, IHG extended the certificate’s scope to include Kimpton and Regent hotels as well, as a good-will gesture to make them easier to use.

Even better, the certificate is valid on any day, not only the weekend, when redeemed at Kimpton or Regent hotels. It is a temporary policy though and we don’t know if it will be extended beyond 2022.

One quirk is, the BOGOF voucher doesn’t get truly redeemed at Kimpton hotels. I’ve used my voucher at three different Kimpton hotels in the last two years and it never disappeared from my account after the stays.

I’ve seen many reports from other people too, so it’s unlikely to be a singularity. With the BOGOF voucher, in theory you can get unlimited 50%-off discount when staying at Kimpton hotels! You can check and book with the voucher using this link (BOGOF voucher not required).

Just like the Diamond-extension trick, it is probably a (intentional?) bug in IHG’s system, so don’t be surprised if it’s gone one day. However it’s something worth keeping in mind when you are looking to redeem your certificate.

My review of voco St David’s Cardiff

IHG doesn’t have many (any?) inspirational properties in the UK. I have already visited all the InterContinentals and Kimptons, and the voco hotel in Cardiff is the only five-star hotel left for me to complete the bucket.

It was a Principal hotel that became part of IHG due to an acquisition. Principal hotels have been branded differently since then – except Principal York the name of which is still unchanged, allegedly due to its very slow renovation progress.

voco is a conversion brand relatively new to IHG. It doesn’t have a unique brand standard, so existing hotels can join with minimum refurbishment effort involved. voco’s presence can be seen in a few UK cities now, including Edinburgh, Glasgow and Solihull.

I paid only 24,000 points for a Monday night which is a good deal. The hotel’s rate tends to be quite reasonable from what I can see, as they usually charge less than £150 except for Saturday stays.

The voco sits on the Cardiff Bay by the wetlands. It’s location isn’t great for browsing Cardiff, but more like a retreat for a weekend getaway.

The wetlands is ideal for a short stroll. There are a few restaurants, bars and a cinema in the neighbourhood.

The hollow and tall front part of the building, besides the massive window, is a great design.

Upgrade could have been generous. I’m assigned a Deluxe King room but on the third floor only (the hotel has seven floors). I prefer a higher floor so they exchanged it for a (lower-category) Premier room on the sixth floor instead.

Premier room is basically a standard room but with balcony, and Deluxe room has slightly better interior. The hotel is fairly quiet on Monday, but still stingy with the upgrade.

On the flip side, the room is already pretty nice.

The sea view takes away my breath and lights the entire room up, which gives you the best first impression. The interior is simple but refreshing and technical, consistent with the tone set by the view. The television is really small though.

Nothing is better than chilling on the balcony, admiring the summer view when the wind breezed through . There’s more than abundant sunlight – I feel really warm although it’s only like 22 degrees.

I didn’t know hotel rooms with a real sea view do exist in this country!

Hotel guests can use the spa before 11am or after 3pm. The slot between is probably reserved for public paying guests.

As you can tell from the pictures, the facilities are of very high standard and you won’t be disappointed. Given its location though it’s a shame they don’t have an outdoor swimming pool.

A sea-view gym:

Diamond members can opt for the breakfast buffet in the restaurant as a welcome amenity.

The choice and quality are decent. There’s very limited cold spread though, no fruit or yogurt which is bit weird.

In general I am very happy about the stay, and it’s probably my favourite IHG hotel so far in the UK (not counting the Mr & Mrs Smith ones as they are at a different level). If you are looking for a reasonably-priced spa weekend, or a sea-view hotel without going abroad, look no further!

Buy InterContinental Ambassador to extend your Diamond status

In addition to its One Rewards program, IHG has a separate paid membership InterContinental Ambassador designed exclusively for its luxury brands. The value of this membership is arguable, as you can already earn free breakfast and even club lounge access with One Rewards, however its true merit is unpublicised.

The Ambassador membership comes with complimentary One Rewards Platinum status. If you are already Diamond however, joining or renewing your membership has a certain chance of extending your Diamond status by another year.

It’s not guaranteed to work, and since it’s just an Easter egg you can’t complain to IHG if the trick fails. I just renewed my Ambassador online for £200 and it worked (again) like a charm, phewww!

(The bug has been around for at least five years, so it would be really naive to think that IHG isn’t aware.)

There are some rules of thumb though based on many real-life reports:

  • Paying £200 at an InterContinental hotel directly, whether it’s a sign-up or renewal, stands a very high chance (if not 100%)
  • Renewing online for £200 is also fairly probable
  • Signing up online, whether for £200 or 40,000 points is the least likely option

When purchasing the membership at a hotel, since they get a commission you could possibly negotiate additional benefits (e.g. suite upgrade or lounge access) in the meantime.

Diamond members are entitled to free breakfast when staying at IHG hotels so it actually means something now, compared to the old Spire tier. If you have Diamond status but cannot requalify, it’s well worth considering booking an InterContinental hotel and purchasing the Ambassador membership there.

Coming soon: Join or renew InterContinental Ambassador for 20K bonus points

(Now live)

I’ve been holding off renewing my Intercontinental Ambassador membership in the hope of another renewal offer. The offer is indeed coming back finally, however…

Refer to the following image for details:

Basically, join or renew your Ambassador membership between September 2nd and December 31st to activate the offer. Once enrolled, stay two nights at any InterContinental, Regent or Kimpton hotels by January 31st 2023 to receive 20K bonus points. The offer is not live yet, but I expect the t&c to reflect it very soon.

The two nights must be paid, but redeeming the Ambassador BOGOF voucher also counts. If you are unfamiliar with InterContinental Ambassador you can read my review here – in my opinion it’s a great program and you can earn the annual fee back from one BOGOF stay already. 20K bonus points is another reason to join.

You can renew your membership online 92 days before it expires by paying $200 or 40,000 points, and the former option comes with a bonus of 15,000 points. You can also pay to renew it when staying at an InterContinental hotel, but not all of them know how to do it.

The problem is, my membership expires on September 1st! Of course I can wait one more day to re-join and take advantage of the offer, but I don’t want to risk not renewing my Diamond status, which is worth much more than 20K points.

A friend has called IHG’s customer service who confirms the authenticity of this promotion. What they’ve also said is re-joining on the same month (in my case September) is also considered renewal, but I’m not sure if I want to take the punt.

Live: IHG 4x bonus flash sale

We wrote about IHG’s new targeted offer for 30k points last week. There is another offer that has gone live which you may double dip.

The offer is only publicised on China’s Wechat platform but you can read some details from the poster above.

  • All IHG members in Greater China (Mainland / Hong Kong / Macau / Taiwan) can participate
  • Stays at any IHG hotels globally are eligible
  • Book between August 29 and 31 (Beijing Time)
  • Stay in September
  • Earn quadruple points on all stays
  • Bonus is capped at 100k

Note that only stays booked on those three days count. It’s basically an extension of the expiring Q2 offer, although there’s no longer a milestone requirement to accrue the full quadruple points.

You can register to the offer here. Upon successful registration you should be able to find it in your account’s Offers section:

In theory, your IHG’s account address needs to be in Greater China to be eligible, however people with overseas address appear to be able to enrol too. My speculation is, although it’s a regional campaign, IHG didn’t bother to enforce the address check technicality.

Anyway, temporarily “moving” your IHG account to China is simple, and as hotel stays globally can trigger this offer it’s barely a hurdle.

I’ve managed to snap both the 4X Flash Sale and 10K Points for Every 5 Nights offers. It could work very well for September stays, especially if you are hoping to mattress run 40 nights for the annual lounge pass.

Act NOW: IHG hotels for 16,000 points globally

IHG’s IT system has been playing up quite a lot recently. There was a global “Flash Sale” where you could get InterContinental and Regent Hotels for 40,000 points or under, and it even happened twice. It appears that a new Sale is going on, and this time it’s even better.

In a nutshell, many many hotels are available at 16,000 points globally on August 5, 2023.

This is regardless of the hotel brand, and available across many cities including London, Paris and New York. Not all hotels are on offer though, for example Amsterdam and most Berlin hotels are excluded (barring InterContinental Berlin).

I myself have provisionally booked the InterContinental Madrid / Lyon, and Kimpton Barcelona.

The date is very far out, so I’d suggest to lock in a few hotels for now and decide later. Unfortunately it’s only valid on that one date only, so you won’t be able to try out more hotels – unless of course, that the error fare appears again later…
