My review of Gritti Palace and St Regis Venice

My friend had an expiring 85K Marriott FNC from the Amex card and we were trying to redeem it together. We sifted through the high-end hotels in Europe and agreed on Venice, as it was easy to get to by flight and we could try out both the St Regis and the Luxury Collection hotels.

Both hotels are near the San Marco Square in the main island. From the Venice airport you could do either 20 minutes by bus (€20) + 30 minutes’ walk, or 80 minutes by boat transfer (€15) + 10 minutes’ walk. There’s no car inside the island, so the last option is “water taxi”, which will set you back €150!

Venice is very pact so hotels tend not to occupy a lot of space. The Gritti Palace hotel, part of the Luxury Collection, has quite a small entrance and you wouldn’t spot it easily.

Gritti Palace has a very long history that dates back the 14th century. It turned into a hotel in the 19th century.

I’ve stayed at my due share of “palaces” in Europe, and I’m still astonished at how beautiful this hotel is, which I guess is from the Venetian school.

The suite night award cleared into a one-bedroom suite.

Their bathroom amenity is from Acqua di Parma, and my friend loves them a lot. He took all of them before the turndown service however the housekeeping didn’t bring in any more supplies, and I couldn’t stop laughing…

It’s my birthday in couple of days and we left note. The hotel has kindly prepared a cake and champagne.

Have a look at the gorgeous restaurant:

Breakfast buffet:

A-la-carte menu:

I was wondering whether the complimentary breakfast covers all items, until I saw the caviar… Food is generally good especially the pastries.

My friend had a spa treatment and here’s a photo:

There’s another restaurant with an outdoor terrace, but probably seasonal and closed during the winter.

The hotel’s concierge is very friendly and professional. When we came back from sightseeing the second day he chased and told us that there’s a free tour to a glass factory, and he could coordinate with the St Regis if necessary. We declined the offer but really appreciated the gesture.

Our next night is at the St Regis, which is closer to San Marco and the port. Its entrance is in a hidden courtyard and very quiet.

In contrast with Gritti Palace it is a very modern hotel. The property was recently renovated and upgraded from the Westin brand – quite a climb up the ladder!

Interestingly I found this sculpture, which is the work of Jaume Plense like the one I saw at At Six.

The hotel has four buildings, however according to the staff they don’t really differ in terms of room types or themes. Our suite night award materialised as a Venetian Suite, which is a suite in one of the lower categories.

It is new and reminiscent of an upscale, expensive apartments. Made aware of my birthday they added some decoration in the bedroom.

Acqua di Parma again – this time my friend left a €5 tip and housekeeping brought two sets of amenities :p

Champagne and cake, but the cake from Gritti Palace is much more delicious.

Breakfast buffet and menu:

The plates are so delicate and I love them, food quality not so much.

Couple of photos of the gym. Neither hotel has a swimming pool.

If I need to choose between the two I’ll go for Gritti Palace at the drop of a hat, as it’s got much more of a character and the service is also better. We had a coffee at the Aman as well, and I must say I was truly impressed.

Marriott Q1: double elite credits and 1,000 bonus points

There were rumours last week about a repeating Marriott offer from last year, which turned out to be true. You could sign up to Marriott’s 1000 Times Yes offer here.

  • Register by April 15th
  • Stay between February 13th and April 29th
  • Earn 1,000 bonus points per paid night, plus double elite night credits

It is exactly the same Q1 offer as 2023. If you are wondering why February 13th, Chinese New Year is on February 10th so Marriott expects enough demand and no need for a promotion before that date.

It is a great offer to score some elite night credits for status, the annual choice benefit or lifetime status, but remember that only paid nights count. Marriott awarded its China members many night credits a few months ago and many regretted have stayed too much, but I don’t think it’s gonna happen again this year.

My review of NEW Hotel Athens

After Melia Athens I wanted to move closer to the Acropolis, and decided on the NEW Hotel, a member of Marriott’s Design Hotel collection. 65,000 points for two nights is pretty good, and perfect for me to spend the 35k free-night certificate.

The location is excellent as you are only five minutes away from the main square and tube station, very convenient but also quiet at the same time. The Acropolis is within walking distance. In short it’s an ideal location for tourists.

The property is run by Yes Hotels, who owns a couple of other Design Hotels in Athens including Periscope and Semiramis. Unfortunately Marriott elite members receive very limited benefits at Design Hotels, and as a Titanium member all I get is 1,000 welcome points and room upgrade. Breakfast is not included, and the €35 price is bit insane in my opinion.

Good news is Superior Room is bookable using points, and I received a further one-category upgrade to Superior Plus.

The way how the basin just sticks out is quite weird, so is the mirror behind it.

The “ladder” by the wall is actually a chair. As a Design hotel there are for sure some design elements in the room, whether you agree with the concept or not is a different matter!

There’s no bathtub but the rain shower is powerful.

I received a bottle of water and some local delicacies as a welcome gift, and some more during the turndown service. I love baklava, but don’t think I’m a fan of Greek desserts otherwise…

As a result of the upgrade, my room comes with a balcony.

I went to the restaurant on the rooftop for some pictures.

Gym is at level -1. I’m sure there’s a jacuzzi hidden somewhere as well although I didn’t find it, as I was told by the staff.

I’m not necessarily fond of the hotel’s design choice, but the room is good in general and the location is perfect. Compared to the other Marriott hotels in Athens NEW does have some advantages, and is a decent option if the price is right.

Work for a big company? Enjoy instant Marriott Platinum status and fast track

Marriott’s Platinum status is well sought after, as it comes with handy perks including room upgrade, free breakfast and lounge access. If you work for a large company, you may qualify for a fast track offer that grants you access to such elite status immediately.

The following companies are eligible for the Platinum Challenge:

Offer rules are:

  • You need a corporate email address to validate
  • You can enrol as a new member, or with your existing Member/Silver/Gold account
  • A three-month Platinum trial is awarded immediately
  • Complete 15 paid nights during the trial to keep your Platinum status
  • You can only participate once every three years

The trial terminates at the end of the third following calendar month, so it’s best to enrol at the beginning of a month. For example if you register on February 1st, your challenge lasts until May 31st.

Once you’ve managed the challenge, you will enjoy Platinum benefits through March 2026 which is great. If you (or anyone you know) works for an eligible company, it’s worth considering undertaking the challenge.

Reminder: London NYE hotel bookable now on points

Just a quick reminder that, if you need a hotel for the New Year’s Eve, they have already been loaded into the system and bookable using points now.

If you are looking to watch the fireworks, the most convenient option is Marriott Country Hall. It is located in the White zone and all hotel guests receive wristbands prior to their stay. You could walk down literally 15 minutes before midnight to watch the show.

My friend who went last year had some troubles though as the staff insisted they must have tickets to get on the bridge. It was confusing and horrible, but luckily they got in eventually. You may also see (some of) the fireworks from inside the club lounge and certain guest rooms.

Availability of Marriott County Hall hasn’t been loaded yet but I expect it to be soon. It will be priced at around 120,000 points, and unlikely to sell out even close to the date.

Another similar option is Great Scotland Yard. It is not as close to the show as the Marriott, and you cannot see anything from inside the hotel. But it is in the Blue zone which has an arguably much better viewing angle.

Also it costs only 29,000 Hyatt points per night. Reward night is currently not available but a friend of mine managed to book it a few days ago.

Fireworks aside, here are some hotels that are good value on points:

Marriott soft landing and annual choice benefit

If you haven’t selected your 50-night and 75-night annual choice benefit, remember to do so before January 7th, otherwise Marriott will choose the suite night awards for you by default.

If you want to choose the 40K free-night certificate for the 75n benefit, there’s always an advantage waiting till January to make the election. Despite what the term says, your certificate will be valid for one more year.

As you can see, mine is valid through the end of the 2025. The suite night award on the other hand, doesn’t offer this quirk. That said, SNA is supposed to become more valuable soon, as Edition and Ritz Carlton hotels will start accepting them.

On a different subject – Marriott leaked its soft-landing policy a few months ago but quietly withdrew it. The FAQ page is now live again, confirming that members who failed to retain their status will be downgraded by only one level in March 2024.

New Marriott / Singapore partnership that fast tracks you to Star Alliance Gold (but with a catch)

Marriott Bonvoy has had long-standing partnerships with airlines including United and Emirates. A new name has just been added to the list – Singapore Airlines. You can view the promotion details and link your accounts here.

[Marriott Bonvoy]

  • Gold: Two flights within six months for Krisflyer Silver
  • Platinum and Above: instant Krisflyer Silver, and four flights within six months for Krisflyer Gold
  • Booking class G and award tickets are excluded

Matched / upgraded status is valid for 12 months. As the challenge starts immediately once you’ve linked your accounts, wait till you have relevant flight plans.

One biggest catch is how a “flight” is defined. I’ve seen at least three response emails from SG already, and here’s one of them on China’s FlyerT forum:

In addition, a few data points concerning the ongoing Infinite Journey promotion they have with Shangri-La confirm that it is indeed based on bookings not segments. This is bad news as you can’t complete the challenge in one return trip of four flight segments.

(Update: we’ve now received a data point and a reader was upgraded after one PNR of four segments.)

If you are based in Singapore / Southeast Asia it is still relatively easy (and cheap).

There’s also a “hack” for European residents, as SQ has a fifth-freedom flight between Milan and Barcelona.

Four one-ways cost about €400 (with the discount offered by Trip.com). KrisFlyer Silver is next to useless. Krisflyer Gold however, gives you extensive benefits including priority check-in, extra baggage allowance and business lounge across the Star Alliance network.

[Singapore Krisflyer]

  • Silver: stay three nights within 6 months for Marriott Silver
  • Gold: instant Marriott Gold, and stay ten nights within 6 months for Marriott Platinum

If you are currently Marriott Platinum and above, you could complete the Krisflyer Gold challenge, and at some point link back for the Marriott Challenge, if they allow it.

[Shangri-La Circle]

In case you have Shangri-La Jade membership that’s due to expire, you should participate in the Infinite Journey promotion first if you haven’t done so already. Similarly you’ll get Krisflyer Silver and then need to fly three times in four months to upgrade to Gold.

After 12 months you could then re-do the challenge through Marriott’s offer – their terms explicitly say that previous status match promotions don’t preclude you from being eligible.

7,500 bonus points for new Marriott Bonvoy signups

If you don’t have a Marriott Bonvoy account yet, a new offer is available for signups.

You will earn based on the following bonus structure:

  • 500 points upon registration
  • 2,000 points after the first stay
  • 5,000 points after the second stay
  • You have 90 days to complete the stays

Note that according to the terms, the offer is targeted and non-transferable, although I doubt they will enforce.
