Marriott has extended its two promotions
The current Marriott’s global promotion, where you earn 2,500 points for each paid stay, has just been extended from 18 October to 10 November. So in theory you could earn 57,500 more points!
There’s an additional 5,000 points after the third stay. However no one has got it yet, so presumably it will be deposited when the promotion is over. If you haven’t registered yet, the link is here.
Besides this, there’s another amazing Marriott offer for some UK Amex Platinum cardholders – Spend £400, Get £400 back at select Marriott hotels in the UK and Europe.
The UK Hotel list is:
- JW Marriott Grosvenor House London
- The London EDITION
- Bvlgari Hotel, London
- W London – Leicester Square
- The Park Tower Knightsbridge, a Luxury Collection Hotel, London
- The Wellesley Knightsbridge, a Luxury Collection Hotel, London
- The Westbury Mayfair, a Luxury Collection Hotel, London
- The Langley, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Buckinghamshire
- Trump Turnberry, a Luxury Collection Resort, Scotland
The deadline was set to 23 November at the beginning, which was very short as you’d have only a bit more than a month to use it. It’s been extended to 19 December now, which is good. However I’m not sure how relaxed travel restrictions will be in two month’s time.
Marriott free night voucher after a Homes & Villas stay!
Yes, another piece of Marriott news. You may have heard of Homes & Villas, which is an airbnb-style brand launched by Marriott in 2019. It has been flying under the radar since, but Marriott seems to be making an effort to promote it finally.
You could access the special offer here, which appears to be part of the ongoing Week of Wonders promotion.
- Offer period: October 8 – December 31
- To qualify, a minimum 3-night stay is required at a Homes & Villas property
- You will receive a free night voucher within six weeks of stay completion
- The voucher is valid at any Marriott property, capped at 35,000 points
And here are the benefits you get when staying at Homes & Villas:
- Earn 5 points / $1 (as opposed to 10 points at most brands)
- 1 elite night credit per night stayed
- Gold member earns 500 points as welcome amenity
- Platinum member and above earn 1000 points as welcome amenity
So you don’t get benefits like room upgrade or late check-out etc, which is expected as they are not really hotels, and probably only have a loose contract with the Marriott group.
The problem is, Homes & Villas has a very limited footprint at the moment.
- There is no participation in Asia Pacific at all
- There are twelve participating countries in Europe
- In the UK, it’s only present in the following cities: Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, London, Oxford, Winchester and York
And since you are looking at (posh) apartments here, prices aren’t cheap. For a long weekend in late October, the cheapest option at London is a one-bedroom flat in Brixton:
In Glasgow, you can get a two-bedroom flat for £82 per night, which is a pretty good deal:
Anyway, 35,000 points are worth around £180 – £200, so if you travel to any of these destinations by the end of this year it might be worth weighing your options.
Marriott global promotion: off-peak redemption rates through November
Yesterday I wrote about the new Marriott Week of Wonders promotion – I thought it was for Asia Pacific only but I was wrong, it turned out to be global but each country / region has its own variant.
The UK version can be accessed here. Most of the so-called “offers” listed here are long-lasting ones or more “features” than “offers”, so although Marriott is trying very hard, the majority of this campaign is just a boring propaganda in my view.
And very annoyingly, they mention “50% less when buying points” in the email, whereas if you click through you see it’s actually referring to the ongoing “50% bonus when buying points” offer, which is much less attractive. The message is misleading at the very least, if not deceptive.
There is an genuine offer however. Until October 15, you could book most Marriott hotel globally (although not all) at the cheaper off-peak rate which, as advertised, can save you up to 33% in points. You need to stay by November 30 though, and after October 15 if you modify your reservation it will be repriced.
Marriott’s redemption chart is as follows:
So you pay as little as 5,000 points for a room night under this promotion. Even better:
- You could use the 5th night free benefit, so pay the price of four nights for a stay of five
- It also staggers with the PointSavers offer, which you can learn more here
In the most extreme case, you pay 16,000 points for five nights at a Cat 1 hotel – that’s 3,600 points per night!
Another good news is for the Amex cardholders – from 8 October 2020 to 31 January 2021, all Marriott hotels spend put through the UK Marriott card is going to earn you 10 points / £1 (regular rate is 6 points), which is very good.
Week of Wonders – exclusive Marriott offers in Asia Pacific
In a bid to revive its business, Marriott has been running exclusive monthly offers (Member Day) in China since May. Looks like it has been extended to Asia Pacific (at least for this month), so has potentially become more interesting.
You can access the Week of Wonders offer page here. The promotion period is October 8 to October 15, and there are three region-wide offers available:
- October 8: unrevealed (it’s a quiz competition in China)
- October 11: win a free hotel stay
- October 14: win $200 hotel dining gift card
Moreover, there is a sweepstake where the winner can nominate one name to display on a Manchester United match’s digital boards. It doesn’t seem to be limited to Asia Pacific only, so all Marriott members can participate.
There are also country-specific offers on the Exclusive Offers page. Offers range from dining discount, extra bonus points to special package rates.
My Review of the Abbey Hotel Bath, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel
Spending a weekend in Bath, I have a choice between the Abbey hotel and the Indigo. Although the latter being a brand new property that opened just days ago, I was inclined towards the former because:
- I’m a not big fan of Indigo hotels (small rooms and minimal elite recognition)
- I get free breakfast at Tribute hotels
- A couple of friends stayed at the Abbey hotel and really liked it
So I ended up paying 50,000 Marriott points for two nights at the Abbey hotel. Remember that Marriott hotels are no longer obliged to open all standard rooms for award nights, and this hotel does remove its award availability on a few Saturdays.
It’s located at the edge of the city centre, just 5-minute’s walk from the train station. Staying here, You could easily go anywhere on foot.
My room was ready at 12:30pm and 4pm late check-out was granted without any question. As a Platinum member, I was offered daily breakfast or 1,000 points, and it’s not difficult to choose!
My room was upgraded to a Cinematography Room a week in advance(!), and then a Gallery Room the day before my arrival. There’s no suite in this hotel and Gallery Room is the highest room category already.
The room is around 330 sqft, which is decent for a UK city hotel. It’s got a very boutique design to it (cinema-themed it seems) – I’d imagine the idea of Tribute hotels is similar to that of MGallery and Indigo, although individual hotels may have more independent characters.
I was given a chocolate box as welcome gift.
Unfortunately, there are quite a few teething issues with the room. To start with the desk is tiny: as you can see there’s more than enough space to put a much larger desk, so I’m unsure why they designed it like this. It’s impossible to use the desk for any activity, so think twice before using this hotel as a home office.
The basin is also tiny.
A few minutes after I settled in I heard weird tic-tac noises. Upon inspection I found the window was leading water (it’s raining outside), and I had to stuff a towel under the window to absorb the dripping water.
The worst thing is, the room is not soundproof at all. I could constantly hear guests in the next room talking. It’s worth noting that they were speaking in normal volume, so it’s not like they were shouting or anything.
Breakfast is served in the restaurant, which is nicely decorated.
You choose one hot plate from the menu, and there are takeaway bags of continental items. Food quality is good.
I thought it’s a new hotel – however despite it joined the Marriott family fairly recently, the Abbey Hotel Bath has been operating for many years and don’t forget it’s an 18th century building, so I shouldn’t have been surprised by the various glitches I found.
To be fair, its location and service are great, and the presentation of the hotel as well as the rooms is decent too. The next time I come to Bath though, I might give the Hotel Indigo a try instead.
Courtyard Edinburgh 50% off flash sale
A while ago I wrote about Courtyard Edinburgh‘s 50% off flash sale, which I actually took advantage of. Looks like the deal is back, although more restricted this time.
As promoted on their facebook page, the new offer is:
- Valid for stays in November
- Sun – Thur stays only
- 50% off for a minimum 2-night stay
- exclusive of breakfast
No special code or landing page is needed, just search and book on Marriott’s website.
Rate appears to be slightly higher this time, between £29 and £34 per night. Not as good as the £24 I paid, but still a great deal though. Remember that you’ll get 2,500 bonus points per stay, plus $20 hotel credit per night for Platinum members.
Similar deals from other hotels:
- Courtyard Inverness Airport – 50% off sale
- AC Hotel Manchester Salford Quays – Buy 3, Pay for 2
1,500 free Marriott points for linking your Emirates account
Marriott is known to have reciprocal programmes with airlines, if you have both accounts linked, being elite member with one of them entitles you to some benefits when flying or staying with the other.
I have never participated in any of these programmes, and just received a nice offer by email.
By enrolling in the Your World Rewards programme, which is the Emirates version, I get 1,500 Marriott points straightaway.
It’s very unlikely that I’ll fly Emirates anytime soon, however I wouldn’t say no to 1,500 points in just a few clicks. The t&c however, suggests that only recipients of the email are eligible, so it could be a targeted offer.
Marriott buy points 50% bonus sale
Marriott’s last round of points sale finished two months ago, but obviously they didn’t intend to let us wait long – the new round has just started.
- You get 50% bonus for purchases of 2,000 points or more
- The annual purchase limit has also increased to 150,000 points
- The promotion runs until 22 October
Under this promotion, you pay $83.33 for every 10,000 points, which is roughly £64.8.
50% bonus is Marriott’s second best offer, and it’s not difficult to avail at this price. However, given how frequently the sale is running now, I wouldn’t recommend buying without imminent use.
