(Update: the offer is live now)

IHG’s Q2 offer has been leaked:

  • Register from May 24
  • Stay between June 6 and August 31
  • Choose from two offers:
    • 2,000 bonus points every two nights
    • 10,000 bonus points every four nights

It is identical to what IHG offered end of last year. Note that the sign-up page for this offer isn’t live yet.

15% off your Airalo eSIM purchase

I’ve been using Airalo for the past year when travelling abroad, and I’m very content with the product. It’s true that they aren’t as cheap as if your purchase a physical SIM card locally, but being able to sort it out before the trip without moving SIM cards in and out is a deal-breaker for me.

If you are interested in placing an order, Airalo just launched a new promotion with Mastercard. Up until April 30 2023, you can use the promo code MASTERCARD15 for 15% off all your purchases.

In theory it’s a deal for Mastercard users in Asia Pacific, however I don’t think any check is performed.

Amazon Warehouse £5 free voucher

Amazon has now a new form of promotion that encourages purchase on their Warehouse site. You can check your eligibility here.

If eligible, you’ll be awarded a £5 voucher to use within the next seven days. The voucher is valid against any purchase of £20 or more on Amazon Warehouse. Amazon Warehouse sells second-hand products returned by customers so you need to scrutinise more carefully, but they do mark the condition of products such as “Like New” or “Very Good”.

My review of the Falcon Gold Lounge, Bahrain

I’m flying Gulf Air for the first time and this article will look at the ground experience. Bahrain airport is located on an island in the north east of the country. In fact the island is so much nicer than the city centre that it almost feels like a resort itself.

The airport went through a major refurbishment in 2021 that cost over one billion dollars. The airport isn’t very big though. It’s got four entrances and Gulf Air premium passengers are invited to use Gate 1.

Gulf Air names their premium business class product Falcon Gold, and you can see this brand name everywhere.

You need to go sideways to find the check-in counters. I don’t think it’s a good design, as you couldn’t see which side is less busier.

After checking in you can use the two dedicated emigration desks, and then the fast track lanes for security check. Go up one level and you’ll see the Falcon Gold lounge!

There’s a business centre with desktops and printers for use to the right.

The lounge, although not huge or exclusive, has a modern design and is very new.

It is an open space on the mezzanine floor so overlooks the departure hall.

There’s a snack station at the centre of the lobby.

A mini cinema:

The bar is closed.

There are quite few entertainment activities though: foosball, pool, golf simulator and flight simulator!

Breakfast buffet:

And an egg station:

It is pretty much what you expect at a med-scale hotel in Bahrain, so not impressive. I think they used to offer a-la-carte dining and barista coffee before, but it’s no longer the case.

There’s a kids club too:

Gulf Air doesn’t have the best ground experience, and their Falcon Gold lounge has got nothing to write home about. Unless you want to try out their games, you don’t have to arrive early.

Nordic Choice summer pass: €595 for 7 hotel nights

If you plan to visit Northern Europe this summer, Nordic Choice has released a new product called Summer Pass which is potentially a great deal.

You can view the offer here.

  • Stay dates: June 22 – August 21
  • Applies to 90+ hotels in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland
  • The pass costs €595 and can be redeemed for 7 hotel nights
  • Breakfast included except at Comfort Hotel Express
  • You earn stay credit and points at the Nordic Choice scheme

You can check availability and book at this page. Availability seems quite good although some cities have blackout dates. Most of the participating hotels are under the mid-range (3*) Quality and Comfort brands, but there are a few Clarion hotels (4*) in smaller cities.

The pass is very flexible, as in you can spend the 7 nights consecutively at the same hotel or split them across multiple stays. I did some spot checks and many of the hotels usually cost ~€150 a night, so they can be big savings.

£5 voucher for watching Amazon Prime Video

A friend of mine just received a surprising £5 promotional code from Amazon, claiming that he took part in a Prime Video campaign. I dug a bit and found out more about the offer which you may be eligible for.

You can view the offer page here. Like always you should see your eligibility at the top of the page. Note that you must a Prime member to be able to participate, and in theory you should not have streamed any Prime video in the last six months.

If eligible, you just need to stream any Prime video, and a £5 promotional code valid for 30 days should arrive in your mailbox within a few days. Your basket value needs to be at least £20 to redeem the code.

It’s limited to the first 1,000 redemptions only. There are plenty of short 20-minute episodes on Prime Video if you are looking for a quick way to complete the challenge.

Marriott Homes & Villas 40K points offer

Marriott’s bnb brand Homes & Villas has launched a flash sale which awards a huge stash of bonus points. You can read more about the offer here, but basically:

  • Book between May 1 and May 3
  • Stay by September 9
  • Earn 40,000 bonus points for every stay of four nights and more
  • Properties must be listed in USD, GBP or EUR

The currency restriction was added just hours after the offer launch. It’s funny when Marriott realised they had tons of property in Asia that cost $20 a night…

The bonus points is displayed on the booking page. Note that there might be other fees including cleaning fee and deposit (refundable). The cheapest property I can find in the UK is £240 for four nights (Bolton):

Turkey and Bulgaria are cheaper:

40,000 Marriott points are worth about £240, so it can be a very good return. If you didn’t bag enough night credits in Q1, you may consider this offer to sprint towards Platinum or Titanium status.

Note that Marriott Bonvoy benefits are very limited at Homes & Villas. You accrue night credits as usual but only 5 points per dollar, and there are some welcome points for Gold members and above.

Hyatt acquires Mr & Mrs Smith, and remember to claim the free Gold membership

Hyatt made a surprising move yesterday by announcing the acquisition of Mr and Mrs Smith, a hotel booking platform based in London.

I don’t want to get into the very details of the news, and there are already numerous reports on many blogs covering it. Basically more than 1,500 hotels from Mr & Mrs Smith’s global portfolio are to be added to World of Hyatt in Q2, and similar to the SLH hotels they will fit into the existing redemption categories.

It is bad news to IHG and its members though, as once the acquisition is complete the existing tie between IHG and Smith is going to be cut, without a question. That’s a big loss in terms of spending IHG points.

For now however, there is one thing you need to do – we covered a fast track route to claim free GoldSmith membership (usually £400) a couple of years ago, and it still works as of today. GoldSmith isn’t hugely useful, but there’s a chance that Hyatt will offer status match or trial at least to Smith members soon, and it costs nothing to be ready!
