Hilton status match is back
Hilton started an official status match program a few years ago and it has been on and off since, whereas the rules have also changed multiple times in the meantime. The website just went live again with a newer version of the offer.
You can access the offer here. To participate you need to be an elite member with one of the following hotel programs:
- Marriott Bonvoy (Gold+)
- IHG Rewards Club (Gold+)
- World of Hyatt (Explorist+)
- Best Western Rewards (Diamond+)
- Choice Privileges (Diamond)
If your program is not listed you could still select Other and provide the details. Some of these statuses are extremely easy to obtain – take IHG for example, you can simply pay $200 to join their Ambassador program (which is well worth it) and be upgraded to IHG Platinum straightaway.
Once your application is approved you will be upgraded to Gold for a 90-day trial period. During the trial period, you can:
- Stay 7 nights and keep the Gold status, or
- Stay 12 nights to upgrade to Diamond
If you fulfil any of the challenge, your status is valid through March 31, 2024, which is more than two years from now.
The rules are tougher than last year, as back then you only needed 5 nights / 9 nights respectively.
If don’t have status with Hilton and have an upcoming stay with them, it’s a no brainer to sign up to this status match promotion. Gold status gets you free breakfast right away (except in the U.S. where you only get a credit) and room upgrade, and if you can stay enough to achieve Diamond, you will enjoy guaranteed executive lounge access at most of Hilton’s branded hotels.Facebook Twitter WhatsApp
Preferred Hotels program revamp, and potential status match opportunity
Similar to LHW, SLH and Mr & Mrs Smiths, Preferred Hotels is also a hotel alliance for independent boutique hotels. They have been in the process of revamping their loyalty program in case you are interested.
[I Prefer Program]
There are currently two tiers in the I Prefer program: you sign up as an Insider and immediately enjoy room upgrade, early check-in and late check-out. After earning 50,000 points (=$5000 spend) you are elevated to Elite, with enhanced point earning rate and welcome amenity.
Two new tiers will be added on August 1st: Explorer requires half of the status points of Elite, but with more or less the same benefits; and new benefits such as food and beverage credit will be added to the Elite status. Authority, which is the invitation-only top tier, will enjoy free breakfast and executive lounge access where applicable.
Unfortunately the benefits still look quite weak. As a comparison, LHW offers all members free breakfast, and for SLH there are ways to immediately qualify for Indulged / Inspired that offers the same benefits too. Why Preferred Hotels thinks breakfast is such an exclusive privilege that can only be awarded to their top VIP guests is beyond me.
[Redeeming Points]
The way I Prefer points work now is similar to Accor – 12,500 points are converted to a $25 gift certificate which can be redeemed when booking any hotels on their website. Considering you earn 10 points per dollar spent, that’s equivalent to a 2% return which is incredibly poor.
They probably have realised it too, and are now moving to a redemption system that are more similar to mainstream programs such as Marriott, Hyatt and Hilton. Having launched in North America, hotels now cost a fixed price of between 15,000 points and 150,000 points a night:
This definitely looks much more interesting.
[Status Match]
I Prefer runs frequent fast track promotions that provide easy access to their Elite tier. At the moment there is one for Mastercard World / World Elite / Black card holders, where you get the status after only one eligible stay at participating hotels.
According to their FAQ page:
I currently have elite status with another hotel rewards program. Does the I Prefer Program offer status matches?
Yes, you may contact [email protected] and provide proof of your status at another hotel rewards program.
You can also request a direct status match by sending them an email.

[Refer a Friend]
If you are interested in joining I Prefer, they have started a refer-a-friend program as well. Sign up using my referral link and both of us will get 1,000 points as a bonus.
A Surprising Giftbox from Starlux Airlines
Today is the first day of the Lunar New Year of Ox, and a nice surprise has just hit my mailbox!

The story started last year when Taiwan’s Starlux Airlines (星宇航空) launched their status match initiative. As the status was gonna be good for four years, I took part although I saw no immediate use of the airline. My BA Gold was matched to Insighter, the highest membership level of their COSMILE programme.
I was then approached by their customer service asking me to complete my contact details, as “a nice surprise will be on its way soon”. Unfortunately it didn’t happen as soon as they promised, although I had no complaint at all considering I got the status totally for free!
Almost a year after the match, on Tuesday I woke up seeing a Whatsapp message from DHL:

And I knew immediately that the belated gift is finally coming, so exciting!
The giftbox arrived onto my doorstep on Friday, sealed with Starlux’s logo on top.
Enclosed on the upper layer is a very well presented Insighter membership card:

I must mention that it is a metal card, and feels as heavy as my Amex Platinum. This is no doubt the most lovely membership card I’ve ever seen from an airline or hotel group.
Underneath you’ll find a luggage tag, which as described is made of vegetable-tanned leather. Again my named is engraved, which is a nice special touch.

All in all I’m very happy to have received such an exclusive gift, although I’m not sure that I deserve it. Just a reminder that Starlux’s status match programme is still ongoing, although your matched status will be valid only for one year now.
Ascott launches status match promotion
Ascott is a serviced apartment group based in Singapore. We wrote about their generous buy points promotion a while ago (already ended), and then the status match opportunity to Amex Platinum membership. They have just started a wider status match promotion, which makes becoming elite even easier.
The offer’s page is here. You need to have status with Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG or Accor, and at least one stay with that programme in the last 18 months. Applications are processed within 10 business days, and once approved the status is valid for a year.
A reminder of the benefits:
Ascott Gold
- 30% off birthday voucher
- Welcome gift or drink
- Early check-in & late check-out
- Free airport transfer in the Middle East
- Room upgrade in Europe (subject to availability)
Ascott Platinum
- 40% off birthday voucher
- Welcome gift or drink
- Early check-in & late check-out
- Free airport transfer in the Middle East
- Free breakfast in Europe
- Room upgrade worldwide (subject to availability)
For stays in Europe, Platinum members get free breakfast at the minimum which is not bad. Other benefits like room upgrade are subject to availability, unless your experiences say otherwise I wouldn’t have high expectations.
Bamboo Airways’ (conditional) status match programme
Bamboo Airways is a new airline based in Vietnam. They were founded only in 2017 so still fairly young as of today.

To give you some context, TAP Portugal ran a status match promotion back in March, for which you could match *A Gold or Silver status to your Skyteam or Oneworld cards. The promotion has just re-opened, so don’t miss it this time if you didn’t join the party!
